| Interview
with Neal Scarborough12th July 2003 |
| |
How
old were you when you first got into dance music ?
I was about 15. The scene was small and very underground.
I was hooked from the first visit to a club. I remember
it vividly, the smell the atmosphere. The following
day I went out and bought clothes like the kids in the
clubs were wearing and had a similar haircut. |
| |
Who
were your early musical influences ?
There were no big DJs that I can remember at this particular
time (1990). So I guess I looked up to the pirate DJs
in Sheffield at the time. People like Winston (Forgemasters)
and Parrot (All Seeing Eye). All the early Strictly
Rhythm stuff was very inspirational too. |
| |
Where
was your first gig ?
I played my first club gig (I played on pirate radio
before this) at a club called Trash in Sheffield. This
was in 1993. I filled in for Danny Rampling who cancelled
and Seb Fontaine also played on that night. |
| |
Describe
your sound in 3 words?
Uplifting, smooth and envigorating. |
| |
What
was your most embarrising DJ moment ? No be honest!!
I once took the needle off the wrong deck in front of
2000 people. I think people thought I did it on purpose
so I played up to it and started to get the crowd clapping-
luckily I pulled it off. |
| |
Now
Matt from being resident of Gatecrasher you have been
lucky enough to play in countries all over the world.
Out of all the countries you have played in what has
been your favourite? and why?
I love Australia. The climate, the people and of course
the clubs. I've played some of my most memorable gigs
down-under and I cant wait to go back. |
| |
You
have played Space @ The Temple Theatre a number of occasions
now. What do you think of the venue and the clubscene
in Ireland in general?
I love playing in Ireland- its like a home from home
for me. I cant really remember playing a bad gig out
there (North or South of the border). I think people
are all to quick to talk down the club scene where ever
you are and I think that there is an element of that
in Ireland. I remember around 1995, people were saying
its all over- clubs are empty. But then came clubs like
Gatecrasher who changed the face of things and clubs
all over were soon packed again. I think much the same
will happen now- we are in a stage of transition but
things will change around soon enough…. Keep the
faith! |
| |
You
have been very busy working in the studio on new material.
Tell us about your fourth coming productions.
I have a single coming out in September called Day One.
It's a collaboration between myself and Smith and Pledger.
It's coming out on Anjuna Beats and is already getting
good support from the likes of Tiesto, Ferry Corsten
and Armin. We have just completed a follow up, which
is a vocal track- I'm very excited about this track. |
| |
Whats
your current top 5?
Matt Hardwick v Smith and pledger- Day One
Scott Bond v Solar Stone- Untitled
Laura Turner- Soul Deep (Signum mix)
Atlas- Circulation
Signum- Push Through |
| |
Finally
matt. Well you be playing anymore dates in Ibiza this
year?
I was supposed to be doing a residency for Gatecrasher
but as you know the decision was made to not go ahead
with the gigs. But I do have dates with Slinky still
to come.
Matt I would like to thank you for taking the time
out your busy schedule to do this interview for nealscarborough.com
and cheers for the support with the track. All the
best mate!
Cheers mate !
